In the midst of this past spring semester at the University of South Florida, I began looking for a summer internship. The quest to find the perfect internship isn’t always easy, and as somebody who wants to work specifically in the sports industry, it became a little bit more complicated.
Last summer, I was an intern for the Jacksonville Sharks and had a fantastic experience. That being said, I thought I’d look for another sports team to intern for. However, given that summer isn’t exactly the prime season for sports, I began to doubt that it’d be possible for me to find an internship that aligned with my interests.
I soon realized that I had not considered the possibility of searching for a sports marketing agency. I did some research to see if there were any in the Tampa area, and I came across Knox Sports Marketing. I browsed the agency’s website, and it immediately piqued my interest. I began to think it’d be a good opportunity for me to have experience within an agency setting and learn more about the other side of the industry.
I pursued an internship with Knox, and after an interview, I was offered a position as a summer intern. I accepted the position and have had an amazing experience since.
I’ve learned an incredible amount throughout my time here. Coming into this internship, I didn’t know too much about the social media aspect of marketing. It’s something we’d discuss every now and then during my advertising classes, but we didn’t typically go too in-depth about it.
My mentor throughout my internship here, Morgan, taught me a lot about what is and is not effective for social media marketing purposes. I also learned a lot about how to use the business/marketing sides of various social media platforms.
I also had a lot of hands-on experience creating graphics for social media. I made graphics for holidays, events, some of Knox’s clients, and some of my own hypothetical ideas. Graphic design was something I did a lot at USF throughout my classes, but I think my skills were certainly enhanced due to my experience here.
I also was able to write blog posts throughout my time here, which I think was something very valuable for my to practice. Writing blogs isn’t something that was really a part of my advertising curriculum, but I think it’s definitely important in this industry. That being said, I’m very thankful that I had the opportunity to practice writing blogs here.
I’ve learned a lot here, and I’m excited to apply these skills to my future career. After I finish my last semester at USF this fall, I plan to move out of Florida to explore the country a bit more and see what other places have to offer. I am considering going to graduate school, but right now I’m just playing everything by ear and seeing what opportunities come up.
Whatever I end up doing in the future, I am confident that my experience here at Knox will prove to be beneficial to me. I’m grateful for this opportunity and for the people here at Knox that provided me with this experience, and I will most definitely miss it.
